Oral Plastic Surgery for Natural Teeth and Implants presented by Dr. Henry Takei - Periodontist, Los Angeles, CA The last decades has witnessed tremendous emphasis on the esthetic aspect of dentistry. The gingival tissues which frames the dentition is an integral part of "Dental Esthetics". The clinician must have a good biologic and clinical understanding of both the teeth and gingival tissue in order to attain a healthy and esthetic result. Correcting gingival recession, root exposure, loss of papilla, which leads to poor gingival symmetry, is of... For full details, click here Restorative Implant Dentistry for the General Dentist. INDUSTRY NEWS Nobel Biocare has launched an innovative new product for soft tissue stability and esthetic results: The stock Zirconia Abutment Kit... click here SCIENTIFIC NEWS Glauser R, Sailer I, Wohlwend A, Studer S, Schibli M, Schärer P. Experimental zirconia abutments for implant-supported single-tooth restorations in esthetic regions: 4-year results of a prospective clinical study. Int J Prosthodont. 2004 May-Jun;17(3):285-90. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twenty-seven consecutively treated patients with 54 single-tooth implants were included. Zirconia abutments were individually shaped and set on the implants with gold screws. RESULTS: The median observation period for the reconstructions was 49.2 months. No abutment fractures occurred. Abutment screw loosening was reported for 2 restorations at 8 months and 27 months, respectively. CONCLUSION: Zirconia abutments offered sufficient stability to support implant-supported single-tooth reconstructions in anterior and premolar regions. The soft and hard tissue reaction toward zirconia was favorable.
Developers at the German-Swiss medical technology company Clinical House have succeeded, for the first time, in rendering a coating technique used previously in gas turbines applicable in dentistry. The technique was introduced to the international trade press at a press conference yesterday. So-called Gas Flow Sputtering is used to increase energy yields in gas turbine engineering. In dentistry, the zirconium oxide coating significantly improves the tissue compatibility and aesthetics of implants and, at the same time, utilizes the mechanical properties of titanium as the base material. The application of zirconium oxide in the transitional region between the implant screw fixed in the bone and the dental crown can also considerably enhance soft tissue adhesion and bacterial sealing. According to the latest studies, the causes for the development of periimplantitis include micro-movement of the implant, inadequate soft tissue adhesion, bacterial colonization along the gingival line and the absence of physiological force transmission in the cortical region. These insights were discussed with the paradontologists, implantologists and dentists at the Academy of Periointegration in November 2006 and were taken into consideration in the development of the novel PerioType implant. The key design feature of the periointegrative implant is the coating of the abutment and implant neck with white zirconium oxide. Here this is applied on the grey titanium metal base material and forms a strong atomic bond. "This chemical bond is the strongest material bond one can imagine", says Dirk-Rolf Gieselmann, chairman of the board at Clinical House Europe and head of the development group. PerioType implant systems are set to find applications in the "Dental Highcare Center" network, in dental practices or practice clinics specializing in implantology, which advise and treat according to the Academy of Periointegration standards of quality, competence and aesthetics. However, the field of periointegration should also be established in advanced training. Here the Faculty of Dentistry at the University of Witen/Herdecke, Germany is currently developing a curriculum for a degree program "Master of Science in Oral Rehabilitation" with elective specialization in periointegration.
